Musecage
In 2017, Kobe Bryant sat down for an interview on ESPN’s First Take. The Black Mamba wasn’t there to analyze statistics or make playoff predictions.
He was there to share a passion that eclipsed his love for basketball.
Storytelling.
Throughout his 20-year NBA career, Kobe always defined success on the basketball court by the number of championships he won—five to be exact.
Each season was a quest, with the only acceptable outcome being an NBA Finals win.
Max Kellerman posed a question to the retired basketball Hall of Famer,
"What's your championship now?"
“It’s the reactions... from families. I see parents saying they can finally communicate life lessons to their kids through the content I produce. That’s my championship now.”
Kobe had recently created the short film Musecage.
A Musecage is an imaginative space filled with all the things that inspire you. He envisioned it as a tool for children, and really anyone, to visualize what drives them.
"You don't need a hammer and nails to build a Musecage," he told his animated sidekick, Little Mamba, "All you need is curiosity.”
Kobe developed a love for writing at Lower Merion High School, just outside Philadelphia. He saw the power of storytelling as a teenager entering the NBA and even started writing his own commercials.
Kobe's legacy lives far beyond the basketball court.
He'll always be one of my favorite storytellers.
What’s your second act?
It’s never too late for a new beginning.
Kobe seamlessly transitioned from athlete to storyteller, even winning an Academy Award for the short film "Dear Basketball" in 2018.
Fellow Hall of Famer Magic Johnson did something similar, trading his Lakers jersey for a place in the boardroom, becoming an enterprise mogul in the Crenshaw District of Los Angeles. I switched careers back in 2014, going from music industry drone to managing a team of software engineers at a tech startup.
Your environment is critical
Kobe emphasized filling your world with things that spark creativity—quotes, photos, art—essentially building a sandbox for your imagination. T
his sandbox for me has expanded to include AI tools that serve as creative catalysts, offering new perspectives and ideas.
If your physical space is constrained, try to create this type of space in the digital world. AI-powered tools can be a part of this digital Musecage, offering prompts, generating ideas, or even collaborating on stories.
It’s not about doing the work for you, but to provide a creative environment that fosters creativity.
Curiosity is the foundation of creation, but that curiosity needs to be nurtured.
Whether you're an aspiring writer or entrepreneur, the space you cultivate, both mentally and physically, will either stifle or unleash your potential.
With AI as a partner, the possibilities for creative expression are endless.
